Canberra led 5-0 after as many minutes with a converted try.
Penrith got on to the scoreboard with a penalty conversion to winger Shane Marshall in the eighth minute.
In the 11th minute, the Panthers took the lead with a converted try to lock forward Warren Fenton. The hosts pulled further ahead after the 20 minute mark with tries to centre Brian Walden all well as Marshall, with a penalty conversion also from Marshall seeing the Panthers lead 17-5 at half time.
Two tries in the opening five minutes, firstly to Fenton and then Walden pushed the score out to 27-5.
Whilst Canberra scored a try in the 65th minute to make it 27-8, Penrith posted three tries in the last 13 minutes – Marshall in the 67th minute, replacement Kevin Pobjie in the 77th and five-eighth Marvin Hicks in the 79th, as well as a penalty conversion from Marshall.
Shane Marshall’s conversion of the Pobjie try was his ninth of the match, and along with his two tries gave him a personal tally of 24 points for the match – setting a new club record.
