The Raiders posted the first points through a penalty conversion to lead 2-0.,
However, the Panthers led 6-2 after 8 minutes when Greg Alexander hoisted a bomb about 20 minutes out, and was taken by Brad Izzard on the try line, and simply had to just dive over to score. Alexander added the extras.
Canberra soon after resumed the lead with a converted try, but with six minutes remaining in the half when Tony Trudgett ran an angle and dissected through a defensive gap 10 metres out to touch down under the posts, with the try converted to give Penrith a 12-8 lead at half time.
13 minutes after the resumption, Trudgett bagged a double when Steve Robinson busted through a tackle after a chain of passes, and was looming up inside in support and crossed over adjacent to the left uprights.
Winger Ben Gonzales scored the next three tries to get a hat-trick in the space of 17 minutes – his second try was a 50 metre solo effort after picking up a loose pass on the halfway line – to have the visitors up 32-8 with just over 5 minutes remaining.
In the shadows of full time, the Panthers completed the rout when Robinson finished yet another long range effort which was started when Gary Howell ran off a well timed Royce Simmons pass on the halfway line.
