Parramatta led 2-0 after 7 minutes but soon after Penrith scored the first try, with Norm Gilligan touching down. Although it was unconverted, the hosts led 3-2.

In the 15th minute, the Panthers pressed further ahead with a try to Ian McKechnie, which was converted by Gilligan. A penalty conversion six minutes later had them lead 10-2.

Whilst the visitors reduced the margin with five minutes remaining in the half, the Panthers would lead 15-5 a half time when John Moran scored a converted try.

A Gilligan penalty conversion was the first score of the second half, but a converted Parramatta try made it 17-10 after 47 minutes.

In a 13 minute period, the Panthers put on 10 points to further extend their lead – unconverted tries to Bruce Ward and Mike Leary, as well as two penalty conversions had Penrith lead 27-10 with nine minutes remaining. A converted Parramatta try with less than 2 minutes remaining was nothing more than a consolation.
