WINS | [2003] Round 19: Penrith 29 Newcastle 16

Friday 18th July at Energy Australia Stadium

Penrith 29 – Tries: Rooney (2), Whatuira (2), Lewis (1), Waterhouse (1); Goals: Girdler (2); Gower (1) | Newcastle 16

Penrith posted the first points in the eighth minute when Luke Lewis took a pass 40 metres out and ran a hard line down the right flank and busted through and evaded the multiple cover defenders to touch down in the corner.

However, Newcastle would score the next three tries and hold a 16-4 lead after 31 minutes.

The visitors would bridge the gap just before the break with two back to back tries – with two minutes left, they quickly swung the ball to the left from a quick tap in centre field, with Luke Rooney diving over in the left corner and then on the stroke of half time a ball movement to the right saw the Knights stripped for numbers and Paul Whatuira took full advantage dissecting through a gap to score.

Three minutes after the restart, the 12 point deficit was wiped when Trent Waterhouse took a Craig Gower offload and ran through a gap to dive over adjacent to the left upright, with Ryan Girdler’s first conversion of the evening giving the Panthers a 18-16 lead.

In the 52nd minute, Rooney had a double when he took a close range bomb off the boot of Girdler and only had to fall over the line to score.

With 10 minutes left, the Panthers made it a 7 point lead when Gower potted a field goal from about 15 metres out.

With two minutes remaining, Penrith attacked the short side on the right and Whatuira bagged a double, with Gower’s conversion securing a come from behind win.
