A forward who was recruited by the Panthers from the north western NSW country town of Gilgandra for the 1978 season.

He made his first grade debut in Round 4, starting in the front row against South Sydney.

In just his seventh appearance in the top grade, against Newtown at Henson Park, a collapsed scrum during the first half left him seriously injured. It was later revealed that he had dislocated his neck and damaged his spinal cord, and whilst surgery was able to correct the neck dislocation, he would become a quadriplegic.

In the aftermath, a trust fund was set up to provide him with the financial support needed for the rest of his life, and was later employed by the Panthers, where he has held a number of roles over the past 40 or so years.

An annual club honour awarded during the Merv Cartwright Medal has also been named after him relating to the courageous and determined Panthers player.
