Penrith 23 – Tries: Cartwright (1), Hiku (1), Latimore (1), Martin (1); Goals: Soward (3); Field goals: Martin (1) | Brisbane 22
Brisbane led 10-0 inside the opening 15 minutes, with Penrith pegging back the deficit in the 20th minute when Peta Hiku won the race to a fourth tackle stab kick into the in goal, with Jamie Soward’s conversion reducing it to 10-6.
However, two more tries to the Broncos in a five minute period gave them a 22-6 lead before a Bryce Cartwright try with seconds remaining in the half, and converted by Soward had reduced the visitor’s half time lead to 10 points.
In the 56th minute, Penrith further reduced the deficit when a Soward kick ricocheted off the Broncos defensive line, with Jeremy Latimore kicking it ahead and then legally bumping off a Broncos defender on the try line to successfully ground it.
With 11 minutes remaining, debutant Te Maire Martin stepped and jinked his way over the try line to cross in the corner to level it at 22-all, however Soward was unable to convert from the sideline when the ball sailed to the left at the last second.
Penrith were once again unable to break the deadlock minutes later through a penalty conversion, however with just over three minutes remaining the deadlock was broken when Martin potted a 20 metre field goal to make it 23-22 to the home team.
When the Broncos kicked out on the full from the restart, it allowed the Panthers to run down the clock and record a come from behind victory, and their first for the season.
