Penrith opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Maurie Raper crossed near the posts from the play the ball. The conversion was unsuccessful with the home team leading 3-0.

Manly soon scored an unconverted try themselves to tie it up at 3-all.

A field goal to Wayne Peckham gave the Panthers a 5-3 lead and was further extended when George Piper barged his way over after 26 minutes to lead 8-3.

The Panthers were able to maintain the buffer for 25 minutes of the second half before a Manly converted try locked it up at 8-all.

Penrith would edge ahead with a Bob Landers long range penalty conversion with three minutes remaining and were able to hold on for victory.
