Friday 3rd September at Penrith Stadium
Penrith 18: Gower (2), Lewis (2), Rooney (2), Roberts (1), Waterhouse (1); Goals: Girdler (7) | Brisbane 20
Penrith opened the scoring when Amos Roberts scored the first try after 8 minutes after some lead up work from Luke Priddis and Trent Waterhouse, and 5 minutes later a penalty conversion was slotted by Ryan Girdler to lead 8-0.
Brisbane struck back with a converted try to reduce the home team’s lead to 2, but three tries in nine minutes saw the Panthers lead 26-6 after 28 minutes. The first try was to Waterhouse when he brushed aside a tackle at close range, followed by Craig Gower collecting his own kick to score and then Luke Lewis avoiding the touchline through some deft footwork.
The Broncos second try just before half time made it 26-14 at halftime.
Lewis’ second try nine minutes after the restart pushed it out to 36-14, and two more tries, the first to Luke Rooney and the second being a double for Gower saw the Panthers lead 42-14 with eight minutes remaining.
A late consolation try to the Broncos made it 42-20 but the Panthers had the final say in the contest with a second try to Rooney on the stroke of full time.
