The Rabbitohs scored the first two tries to lead 12-0 after 19 minutes.
In the 35th minute, Apisai Koroisau ran the ball from dummy half 20 metres out and weaved his way through the broken defensive line and burrowed his way over.
With only seconds remaining, Brian To’o picked up a loose pass from South Sydney and bumped off the covering defence on an 80 metre run to the try line. Nathan Cleary’s conversion made it 12-all at half time.
Four minutes after resumption of play, the Panthers led for the first time when Spencer Leniu grounded a Cleary grubber kick in the in goal, with the successful conversion making it 18-12.
Twelve minutes later, another grubber kick into the in goal, this time from Jarome Luai was grounded by Izack Tago.
In the 63rd minute, a penalty conversion off the boot of Cleary pushed it out to a 14 point lead.
The Panthers iced the contest – and booked a spot in their third straight grand final – with just over two minutes remaining with an individual effort from Cleary, when yet again a grubber into the in goal grounded by Cleary.
