The Sharks scored the first two tries to lead 10-0 inside the first 15 minutes.
However, the Panthers would be next to score when Izack Tago ran off a short Jarome Luai pass and stepped his way back inside to evade the sliding cover defence to touch down.
Nathan Cleary’s penalty conversion on the stroke of half time had reduced Cronulla’s lead to just 2.
Inside the first minute of the second half, Penrith had taken the lead when they shifted the ball to the left edge, with Tago busting the line and finding Dylan Edwards in support to outrun the Sharks cover defence to score. Cleary’s conversion further extended the lead to 14-10.
In a tight and tough encounter, the Panthers only secured the two premiership points just over two minutes from the end when Luai stepped back inside with a solo effort to touch down, with Cleary’s extras giving the hosts an unassailable eight point buffer.
