Both teams slotted early penalty conversions to have the score at 2-all after four minutes.

In the eight minute, Penrith crossed for the first try when Steve Robinson took a low trajectory bomb off the boot of David Burnes.

The visitors soon after extended their lead to 12-2 through a try to hooker and captain Royce Simmons which was converted by Greg Alexander.

Two more penalty conversions to the Magpies reduced it to 12-6, but a converted try to Gary Howell and then another penalty conversion to Alexander made it 20-6 at half time.

A second try to Howell soon after the resumption made it 26-6.

Whilst Wests once again reduced the margin to 26-10, Penrith posted the next three tries over a 20 minute period (Ben Gonzales in the 52nd minute, Alexander in the 58th minute and Brad Izzard in the 72nd minute) to push the Panthers lead out to 42-10.

A Magpies try with just over 5 minutes remaining was nothing more than a consolation.
