A Grahame Moran try, which was converted by Bruce Ward after 13 minutes had Penrith lead 5-0.

The visitors once again reduced the lead soon after the resumption to make it 7-6.

A penalty conversion from Gary Harvey made it 9-6 on the 50 minute mark, but Wests once again were next to score with a penalty conversion to make it 9-8.

Dave Applebee scored in the 72nd minute – he was put down by a Magpies defender close to the line, but the tackle was not deemed completed, and hence he regained his feet and ran about 25 metres to touch down over the line.
