A Norm Gilligan penalty conversion opened the scoring after 10 minutes, and was further extended to 7-2 two minutes later when captain Ron Lynch crossed for the first try, which was converted by Gilligan.

Whilst Wests got on to the scoreboard with a penalty conversion, a try to Noel Sing in the 16th minute, converted by Gilligan made it 12-2.

Penalty conversions from both teams rounded out the scoring for the first half, with the Panthers holding a 14-4 lead.

A second try to Sing six minutes after the resumption, which was followed by tries to John Moran and Bruce Ward had pushed the visitors lead to 25-4 in the 67th minute.

Whilst the Magpies finally posted their first try with five minutes remaining, it was too little too late, and the Panthers finished off a dominant display with a second try to Lynch on the verge of full time, with Gilligan adding the extras by landing his sixth goal.
