Both Penrith and South Sydney booted penalty conversions to be 2-all after 11 minutes.

Penrith crossed for the first try in the 20th minute when lock forward Phil Kleindienst finished off a long range movement that was started by captain Ron Lynch and winger John Moran.

Two more quick tries had Penrith lead 17-2 at half time – the first to David Irvine who ran 75 metres off a South Sydney kick reception, and then to five-eighth Zac Olejarnik when he took a pass from centre Norm Gilligan who picked up a Rabbitohs pass that went to ground.

Souths scored the first points with a penalty conversion, however a try to Moran seven minutes after the resumption had the Panthers lead 20-4.

Two tries to the home team in the final 10 minutes were nothing more than consolations, with the Panthers deserved victors.
