In a top of the table clash (first placed North Sydney versus second placed Penrith), it was a battle indicative of the top two teams, with the match dominated by defence – indicated by a 0-all score line at half time.
It remained scoreless until the 68th minute when the deadlock was finally broken by a penalty conversion off the boot of Greg Alexander to make it 2-0.
With only two minutes remaining, the Panthers had secured the two premiership points when fullback Anthony Xuerub made a break but was cut down only metres short. Ben Alexander from dummy half then passed left to his brother Greg, who first crabbed to the left looking to fire out pass to the left edge, but then changed direction by heading back right by spinning around a full 360 and then spotting a tiny gap adjacent to left up right to touch down.
His conversion made it 8-0 – with all points coming from the captain but more importantly seeing the Panthers leap frog the Bears to the competition lead.
