In Round 9 of the 1979 season he made his first grade debut, as a replacement versus the Eastern Suburbs at Sydney Sports Ground. He would later return to the first grade later in the season, appearing in 8 of the last 10 matches of the premiership season, initially in the centres and then shifting to the second row. He crossed for one try, in the in the 25-21 win over North Sydney.
In 1980, he would be limited to just two first grade appearances later in the season, both on the wing.
