The Magpies led 2-0 after 11 minutes, however, the Panthers soon countered with a try to winger Brian Reeve, which was converted by Ken Wilson to make it 5-2.
This was extended to 8-2 with only three minutes remaining in the half when the other winger Ray Blacklock touched down, and whilst it remained unconverted, a Bill Ashurst penalty conversion on the stoke of half time had Penrith up 10-2.
Nine minutes after the resumption, Ashurst landed another penalty conversion from 40 metres out to make it 12-2.
The visitors had the contest all but sewn up with a three try burst in six minutes – the first to fullback Peter Newsome in the 68th minute, and then a second to Blacklock in the 73rd and quickly followed by one to centre Ross Gigg to blow it out to 25-2.
