Canterbury held a 13-0 after 28 minutes, before a try to Mal McMartin made it 13-3 at half time.
The home team soon after the restart restored the 13 point lead with a try to make it 16-3.
A try to Mike Leary was the start of a 16 point burst in a 14 minute period, which also included tries to Wayne Peckham, Neil Bailey and a second to McMartin. This burst had seen the visitors run down the deficit and lead 19-16 heading into the final 15 minutes.
The only score in the final period was a field goal to Ray Steele, with Penrith recording a dramatic come from behind victory.
