He made his first grade debut in Round 3 of the 1980 season, coming on as a replacement versus Canterbury at Penrith Park, and crossing for a try in their 40-14 loss. The following week, he made his run on debut (at five-eighth), and was selected in every match after that for the premiership season – making 20 appearances, he also finished as the club’s stop try scorer, with 12.
However he would start the 1981 season in reserve grade, and in April suffered a broken jaw and his recovery saw him miss the remainder of the season.
He returned to first grade in 1982, starting at five-eighth in the opening round win over premiership newcomers Illawarra. Making a return in Round 21 as a replacement, he played in the final six premiership matches, mostly in the number 6 jersey but shifted to halfback in the final round.
