Canterbury led 8-0 after 13 minutes.
A great run from Brad Fittler allowed him to set a try up for his centres partner Col Bentley to make it 8-4 26th minute, with Andrew Leeds’s conversion reducing the deficit to 2.
However, a try to the Bulldogs on the stoke of half time made it 12-6 at the break.
Four minutes after the resumption, second rower John Cartwright rampaged his way through the Canterbury defence to touch down under the black dot, with Leeds’ conversion from in front making it 12-all.
Canterbury regained the lead again with two penalty conversions to lead 16-12.
A chain of passes to the right found an unmarked Barry Walker who successfully evaded the cover defence to touch down in the right corner to tie it up at 16-all, however Leeds was not able to land the conversion from the sideline.
Four minutes later, Penrith led for the first time when Glen Liddiard picked up a loose ball that was jolted forward by an alleged high shot from Col Van Der Voort that was not peanlised, with Liddiard running 50 metres to touch down under the posts.
Ben Alexander nailed a field goal from a wide angle and about 20 metres out to increase the buffer to 7 points, which was retained until the full time siren.
