In the third minute, John Moran touched down with Penrith leading 3-0.

However, Canterbury slotted three consecutive penalty conversions to lead 6-3 at half time.

Four minutes after the resumption, Dennis Tutty crossed for a try, with Norm Gilligan’s conversion giving the Panthers an 8-6 lead.

Penrith pulled further ahead with two tries to Graeme Moran – the first in the 49th minute when he scored wide out, and then 12 minutes later when he took a pass from Tutty deep in their half and completed a long range effort, with the home team leading 16-6.

The visitors had reduced it to a 5 point margin with 3 minutes remaining, however the Panthers held them out to record the win.
