The Knights led 4-0 after 6 minutes, but the Panthers soon after equalised through a try to Alan McIndoe.

In the 26th minute, Penrith pulled further ahead when Brad Izzard scored, which was converted by Neil Baker, and the visitors held the 104 lead into half time.

Newcastle struck back nine minutes after the restart with a converted try to lock it up at 10-all.

Seven minutes later, a Greg Alexander try pushed the Panthers back in front, with Baker’s conversion making it 16-10. This lead soon after became 7 when Baker potted a field goal.

The Knights eroded the advantage, firstly through a penalty conversion and then a try with less than two minutes remaining to make it 17-16, however the conversion sailed wide and Penrith held on for a one point victory.
