Manly scored the opening points with a penalty conversion to lead 2-0, before a Gary Harvey penalty conversion tied it up at 2-all.
In the 24th minute, halfback Laurie Fagan dummied at the line and then sent Harvey over in the corner, although his conversion was unsuccessful.
Whilst a Manly field goal reduced it to 5-4, the Panthers led 8-4 at half time when Fagan was once again started the move that ended with Hatton diving over in the corner.
Manly reduced it to 8-6 seven minutes after the re-start, however three minutes later lock Phil Kleindienst crashed over, with Harvey’s conversion extending Penrith’s lead to 13-6.
In the 64th minute, winger Mal McMartin followed through on his own high kick, and with Manly unable to control the bouncing ball picked it up and scored under the posts. Harvey’s conversion gave Penrith a commanding 18-6 lead.
Harvey’s fourth conversion with only two minutes remaining ended the scoring and completed an emphatic upset victory.
