Thursday 22nd April at BlueBet Stadium
Penrith 24– Tries: Burton (1), Crichton (1), Edwards (1), To’o (1); Goals: Cleary (4) | Newcastle 6
A well weighted grubber kick from Nathan Cleary in the fourth minute into the in-goal area was grounded by Stephen Crichton, who was led in a chasing pack including two Knights defenders.
In the 18th minute, Matt Burton ran through the barest of gaps, running off a deft Jarome Luai pass, and ran 15 metres towards the line, running around to improve his position under the posts, with Cleary’s conversion making it 10-0.
However. Newcastle was next to score with a converted try close to half time, reducing it to 10-6 at the break.
A penalty conversion off the boot of Cleary early in the second half pushed them ahead 12-6.
With 13 minutes remaining, the Panthers had a scrum only ten metres out – as it broke up, Isaah Yeo picked it up from the base and then passed it back inside to Dylan Edwards who had also packed in the scrum adtepped through the scattered Knights defensive line still setting itself up from the scrum to touch down adjacent to the uprights.
Up 18-6, the hosts put the match to bed when a shift of the ball to the left edge was tipped on to winger Brian To’o, who acrobatically leapt over in the corner. Cleary’s conversion made it 24-6, and a well-earned win against a committed Newcastle side.
