The Broncos took an early 2-0 lead through a penalty conversion however the Panthers took the lead in the tenth minute when Kurt Capewell ran through a defensive gap at close range to power his way over.
Brisbane would regain the lead to make it 6-4 through an unconverted try, and although a Matt Burton try would once again give the visitors the advantage on the scoreboard, a fifth lead change through a second Broncos try gave the home team a 12-10 lead at half time.
A penalty conversion slotted by Nathan Cleary after 52 minutes tied it up at 12-all.
With the scores still level inside the last 10 minutes, the field goal shootout began – the Broncos fired the first sot which fell short, but soon after Cleary kicked a field goal from more than 40 metres out, which under a new rule introduced for the 2021 season, was awarded 2 points, and pushed the Panthers ahead 14-12.
With just on three minutes remaining, Jarome Luai ran an angled line close to the line and found his halves partner Cleary in support who barged his way through the defensive line to touch down adjacent to the uprights, with his conversion icing the contest in a hard-fought battle.
