Saturday 13th March at Panthers Stadium
Penrith 24 – Tries: Capewell (1), Edwards (1), To’o (1), Yeo (1); Goals: Cleary (4) | North Queensland 0
Second rower Kurt Capewell barged over after six minutes to post the Panthers first try for the new premiership season, which was converted by Nathan Cleary.
A penalty conversion from right in front only minutes later extended it to 8-0.
Despite a number of opportunities, including one that was overturned by the NRL Bunker, it would remain 8-0 at half time.
Twelve minutes after the resumption, Penrith extended their lead when fullback Dylan Edwards ran through a massive defensive gap only metres out touched down adjacent to the left upright, with Cleary’s extras making it 14-0.
Five minutes later, it became 18-0 when winger Brian To’o acrobatically leapt in the corner in an effort to evade the quickly emerging cover defence.
With just under 18 minutes remaining, a high kick from Cleary was caught by Liam Martin on the try line and despite the attention of a number of Cowboys defenders managed to offload it to an unmarked Isaah Yeo who only had to fall over to score.
It remained that score until full time, opening the season with a win but more importantly defensively shutting out their opposition.
