It was 2-all after 13 minutes, before Ron Lynch crossed for the opening try of the contest in the 24th minute, with Bruce Ward’s conversion making it 7-2.

Whilst Balmain reduced it to 7-5, Penrith held a 12-5 lead at half time when Grahame Moran scored a converted try.

The Panthers would cross for three converted tries in a 20-minute period in the second half, with tries to Dennis Tutty, Wayne Moore and Dennis Tutty, which was also boosted by two penalty conversions off the boot of Ward to lead 31-5 after 63 minutes.

The Tigers would cross for a try with 10 minutes remaining but was merely nothing more than a consolation try.
