Ron Lynch opened the scoring for Penrith in just the second minute to lead 3-0, but shortly after Balmain were leading 5-3.

A long-range penalty conversion from Len Killeen locked it up at 5-all in the twelfth minute.

A John Moran try, converted by Killeen gave the Panthers a 10-5 lead but the Tigers would level it up at 10-all at half time with a converted try of their own.

Both teams would trade penalty conversions early in the second half made it 12-all, before a converted try from Killeen made it 17-12 after 46 minutes.

An unconverted try to Balmain made it 17-15 with half an hour remaining, and in a tight contest, Dennis Tutty scored right on the bell when he ran off a Zac Olejarnik pass close to the line, to seal victory for the home team.
