WINS | [2014] Round 3: Penrith 18 Canterbury 16

Saturday 22nd March at Sportingbet Stadium

Penrith 18 – Tries: Naiqama (1), Simmons (1), Whare (1); Goals: Moylan (3) | Canterbury 16

The Panthers opened the scoring when David Simmons leapt up and caught a Jamie Soward cross field bomb, and whilst he was falling passed it to Dean Whare who acrobatically leapt in the far-right corner.

Just before the halfway mark, an almost carbon copy move was affected, with Simmons this time marking the ball over the try line and simply just had to ground it. Matt Moylan’s sideline conversion made it 10-0.

Canterbury however was the next to score and reduced the half time margin to just 4.

The Panthers inched further ahead just after the break with a penalty conversion to make it 12-6, but two Bulldogs tries first equalised and then gave them a 4-point lead with just under 10 minutes remaining.

With just over a minute remaining, a large Soward cut out pass hit Kevin Naiqama on the chest and managed to step around his opposing winger to plant the ball in the corner and lock it up at 16-all.

With the full-time siren sounding, Moylan lined up the conversion, and nailed it from the sideline to give the Panthers a last gasp 2-point victory.
