After seven season playing for Hawkes Bay in the New Zealand rugby union national championship, he switched to rugby league in 1996 and signed with Penrith.

Signed as a forward, he made his first grade debut coming off the bench versus the Western Reds, and made a total of six appearances in his first season.

He would make 16 more appearances over the next two seasons, primarily off the bench but also as a starting forward in both the front and back rows.

In 1999, he returned back to rugby union, signing with the ACT Brumbies in the Super Rugby before one final season for the Wellington Hurricanes in 2000 before injury ended his playing career.
