The Panthers opened the scoring in the sixth minute when they gained field position off a 40/20 kick, and from the ensuing scrum swung the ball across the backline with Dean Whare drawing a 2 on 1 and flicking it to his wing partner David Simmons to cross in the corner. Luke Walsh was able to convert from the sideline to give the visitors a 6-0 lead.
In the 22nd minute the lead was further extended when Kevin Kingston from a standing start evaded a number of defenders from 15 metres out to barge his way over adjacent to the left upright.
The Eels responded with the next two tries, including one on the stroke of half time to reduce the Panthers lead to 12-10 at the break.
Eight minutes after the resumption, a pinpoint cross field kick from Walsh landed in the lap of David Simmons who had a clear path to the line, crossing for his second try, although Walsh was unsuccessful with the conversion and it remained 16-10.
Penrith’s defence remained resolute throughout the second half but were themselves not able to add to their 6 point lead. With less than three minutes remaining, Walsh slotted a field goal from 25 metres out to give them a more than one converted try buffer and ultimately sealed the victory.
