Friday 24th June at Pepper Stadium
Penrith 28 – Tries: Cleary (1), Grevsmuhl (1), Latu (1), Mansour (1), Watene-Zelezniak (1); Goals: Cleary (5) | South Sydney 26
The Rabbitohs scored the first try in the 10th minute to lead 6-0 but minutes later the Panthers struck back with a cut-out ball finding an unmarked Dallin Watene-Zelezniak on the wing, who strolled over untouched.
South Sydney would edge ahead with a penalty conversion but the Panthers took the lead on 30 minutes when Josh Mansour took a Bryce Cartwright offload close to the line and simply had to just fall over to register the four pointer, and take a 10-8 lead into half time.
The visitors struck first in the second half, but when Leilani Latu ran onto a quick play the ball from Peter Wallace at close range the home team once again regained the lead.
The Panthers turned on the attack to further extend their lead when an inside ball from Matt Moylan to Cartwright saw him break the line and drew in the defender, finding Nathan Cleary in support and weaving himself through the line to cross adjacent to the uprights.
When former Rabbitoh Chris Grevsmuhl powered his way over the line in the 69th minute, Penrith were leading by 14.
Two tries within six minutes to South Sydney saw the lead whittled down to just two heading inside the final minute, and one last attacking raid as the full time siren nearly saw the Rabbitohs pull off victory, however luckily for the Panthers the kick went into touch and they held on for a two point victory.
