Sunday 14th August at Hunter Stadium
Penrith 42 – Tries: Mansour (2), Watene-Zelezniak (2), Blake (1), Moylan (1), Peachey (1); Goals: Cleary (7) | Newcastle 6
The Panthers posted the first points when Tyrone Peachey drew in the Knights defender and passed it to an unmarked Josh Mansour on the flanks, to lead 4-0.
On the 30-minute mark, Newcastle took the lead with a converted try, but the visitors were able to lock it up at 6 apiece with less than a minute before half time with a penalty conversion to Nathan Cleary.
Three minutes into the second half, Peter Wallace scooted out of dummy half and found a flying Matt Moylan on his inside, taking the pass one handed whilst behind him and running untouched to the line, grounding it under the uprights.
In the 54th minute, the Panthers pushed further ahead when Waqa Blake took a pass 20 metres out and found a clear passage to the line, with Cleary’s conversion making it 18-6.
Four minutes later, the floodgates threatened to open, with Peachey’s individual effort, running the ball 20 metres out from dummy half made it 22-6, with Cleary’s extras making it 24-6.
A double to Dallin Watene-Zelezniak in the 64th and then 69th minutes, with the second being the third pass from a scrum on the 30-metre line put the contest out of reach for Newcastle at 36-6 heading inside the final 10 minutes.
With 10 seconds remaining, Zak Hardaker drew the defender finding an unmarked Mansour to cross in the corner to make it 40-6, with Cleary’s conversion after the siren posting the Panthers biggest ever win over Newcastle, eclipsing the 46-12 victory at the same venue in 2007.
