Dean Whare finished a backline movement to score the Panthers first try, which was converted by Jamie Soward and gave the home team a 6-0 lead inside the opening five minutes.

Whare had a double when winger Kevin Naiqama batted back a close-range bomb and grounded the ball just over the line with Penrith holding a 12-0 lead.

The Dragons unconverted try reduced the Panthers advantage to 12-4 at half time and it was further reduced just after the resumption to 12-10.

Penrith would be the next to score though when Jamie Soward broke the line and found winger Josh Mansour in support and pushed it out to 18-10.

A Dragons try inside the last two minutes set up a grandstand finish and with them pressing the line in the dying seconds, a handling error allowed the home team to run the ball out of the danger zone and hang on for a 4-point victory.
