In warm conditions, the Raiders were denied twice before the Panthers opened the scoring when new recruit Sika Manu monstered his way over the line, with Luke Walsh adding the extras to give the home team a 6-0 lead.
Whilst Canberra would strike back to tie it up at six apiece another new recruit James Segeyaro darted over from dummy half at close range to give Penrith a 12-6 lead at half time.
Six minutes after the resumption a fifth tackle Walsh kick near the try line was not cleaned up by the Raiders and Lachlan Coote was the beneficiary and allowed the Panthers to push their lead to 18-6.
The Raiders would counter with a try however two late tries to the Panthers inside the last five minutes to Nathan Smith and then Nigel Plum blew out the full time score and gave Penrith a large opening round victory.
