Friday 9th August at Panthers Stadium

Penrith 26: Tries: Edwards (2), Cleary (1), Naden (1); Goals: Cleary (5) | Cronulla 20

A Nathan Cleary penalty conversion after nine minutes had the Panthers hold a 2-0 lead.

After 14 minutes debutant Matt Burton placed a perfectly weighted and timed grubber kick and Brent Naden was the beneficiary when he grounded the ball. Nathan Cleary’s conversion gave the home team an 8-0 lead.

Ten minutes later a Nathan Cleary line break finished with a Dylan Edwards try for Penrith to hold a 14-0 lead.

The Sharks fought back with an unconverted try however on the stroke of halftime Cleary ran at the line at close range and crashed over inside the right uprights. His conversion saw Penrith hold a 20-4 lead at the break.

Three minutes after the resumption Edwards scored his second try with the conversion making it 26-4.

But three tries in a 14 minute period saw Cronulla reduce it to a 6 point margin heading inside the final five minutes.

With a minute and a half remaining, the Sharks performed a raid close to the line with yet another debutant Stephen Crichton diffusing the bomb. With that, the Panthers were able to hold on and record their first win over the Sharks since 2015.
