Penrith won their opening match but would lose their next five to sit ninth. They would then consolidate through the season climbing back up the ladder and staying in touch with the top 5. A final round win over Eastern Suburbs had the Panthers finish equal fifth on the ladder and was scheduled to play a Tuesday night play-off with Manly at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

After being drawn 6-all at full time, the Panthers two penalty conversions trumped Manly’s field goal and after 18 seasons they qualified for their first ever finals series. However, Penrith would be no match for Parramatta the following weekend, losing 38-6.

In his second season, Greg Alexander was awarded the Dally M medal and scored 196 points and breaking Bob Landers’ record for most points in a season.
