In July, Greg Alexander became the first Penrith local junior to be play a Test for Australia, playing two of the three matches in the mid season series against New Zealand. Later in the season, 17 year old Brad Fittler made his debut against Western Suburbs.
Penrith recorded 16 wins from 22 matches and ended the top five for the first time, finishing second behind minor premiers South Sydney. The highlight of these wins was undoubtedly their 38-4 demolition of the defending premiers Canterbury at Penrith Park in May.
The Panthers would lose the first week qualifying final versus Balmain, but finishing second gave them another chance the following week, however would lose to the eventual premiers Canberra in the semi final.
