New coach Ivan Cleary took over a squad that spent the majority of the season rooted in second last, only above western Sydney rivals Parramatta.

In Round 5, captain Luke Lewis became the 8th Penrith player to register 200 first grade matches for the club. In June, he was relieved of the captaincy given his representative commitments. Soon after, he successfully gained a release, joining Cronulla in 2013.

The highlight of the season was undoubtedly a superb 22-4 win over defending premiers Manly in Round 12.

Tim Grant became the 24th player to play State of Origin, selected for New South Wales in Game 3, and making an immediate impression by putting former team mate Petero Civoniceva in his first hit-up.

In the lower grades, the reserve grade team (Windsor Wolves) qualified for the finals, only to be eliminated in week 1. The Under 20s team once again failed to qualify for the finals.
