Newtown led 10-8 at half time, having scored two tries and with Penrith’s points coming from three penalty conversions to Bob Landers and a field goal to Maurie Raper.

On 59 minutes, a try to Dave Applebee saw the Panthers hit the lead, and it soon became 14-10 when Bob Landers took the pass from Grahame Moran, who made a blind side burst.

Penrith were able to withstand the Newtown attack in the final 15 minutes, and in that time further extended their lead to 16-10 through a fourth conversion to Landers.

The victory served as a double celebration, being both their first in the Sydney premiership as well as their first at home.
