St. George scored the first try in the seventh minute to lead 3-0, however soon after a three try burst in just four minutes (all to Peter Langmack, and two of them converted by Reg Walton) had seen Penrith surge to a 13-3 lead after 18 minutes.
The Dragons would counter with a try to reduce the lead 5 points, but a fourth try to Langmack four minutes from half time had the hosts hold a 16-8 lead at the break.
St. George would once again reduce Penrith’s lead with a try early in the second half to make it 16-11 but a fifth try to Langmack in the 52nd minute, although not converted by Walton would restore the eight point half time lead.
But two quickfire tries from the visitors would have the scores tied at 19-all heading into the final 20 minutes of the contest and after 66 minutes a penalty conversion to St. George broke the deadlock and gave them a 2 point lead.
But a try to winger Peter Archibald with 11 minutes remaining saw the Panthers regain the lead by the barest of margins, and were able to hold out the Dragons, although the Dragons had a chance to snatch it but for a narrowly missed penalty conversion.
