Penrith scored the first try to lead 7-2 after 14 minutes when Wayne Peckham scored off a move started by Russ Johnstone busting the defensive line and through passes from Grahame Moran and Ern Gillon.

Minutes later it became 12-2 when Maurie Raper scored from close range.

Whilst a try to St. George pulled it back to 12-5, Russ Johnstone finished a backline movement to crash over and for the Panthers to hold a 15-5 lead at half time.

Penrith’s fourth try would come after 28 minutes when Laurie Fagan worked the blind side off a scrum win and passed it to Grahame Moran to cross over.

The visitors would make the final statement in the contest when they scored their second try with five minutes remaining, however, the Panthers would complete a massive upset over the premiers of the past 11 seasons in what was only their fourth match in the Sydney premiership.
