Two tries and a penalty conversion to Western Suburbs in the opening half hour had the home team hold an 8-0 lead before the visitors hit the scoreboard with a try to Laurie Fagan with only a couple of minutes remaining, which was converted by Bob Landers, to have Penrith trailing 8-5 at the break.

The Panthers reduced it a one point margin with a Landers penalty conversion six minutes after the resumption and soon after hit the lead with five-eighth Ray Steele snapping a field goal.

Penrith built on the lead with two penalty conversions that book ended a try to Rod Elliott in the 60th minute to hold a 16-8 lead.

A converted try to the Magpies with five minutes remaining set up a thrilling finish however the Panthers defence held firm to hold out for a three point win.
