The Panthers opened the scoring with a Bob Landers penalty conversion in the eighth minute and was doubled to 4-0 at the midway point of the first half with a second penalty.

A two try burst in as many minutes, the first to Bob Broad and then to Grahame Moran gave the home team a 12-0 lead after 17 minutes.

North Sydney struck back with two unconverted tries to reduce the lead to 12-6, but Penrith pushed ahead again with a third penalty conversion to Landers and then a Ray Steele field goal with six minutes remaining in the half for the hosts to hold a 16-6 lead at the break.

Two minutes after the resumption, yet another penalty conversion made it 18-8. A second try to Broad six minutes later and then a fifth penalty conversion to Landers had the Panthers hold a 23-6 lead after 59 minutes.

Two quick tries to the Bears had it at 23-12 heading into the final 10 minutes but a second Steele field goal at 74 minutes iced the contest for the Panthers.
