Two tries to winger Bob Mara and three goals to Ian McKechnie saw Penrith hold a 12-5 lead over their western Sydney rivals Parramatta.

Mara however would leave the field early in the second half with a hamstring injury. The visitors gradually fought their way back into the contest and a Parramatta try 15 minutes into the second half had reduced the home team’s lead to just 2 points.

The final 25 minutes turned into an arm wrestle. Although they were tiring, Penrith were able to hold out Parramatta with a superb defensive effort to hold them out – it was Penrith’s first win in four attempts against Parramatta, and their fourth win in a row that season.
