Fourth placed Brisbane opened the scoring with a penalty goal, but the third placed Penrith would score the opening try in the 17th minute with a close-range effort from Greg Alexander, after he tapped ahead after being tackled and with no marker ahead of him.
Two more tries – one to five-eighth Brad Izzard from a scrum and another to winger Allan McIndoe from a Brad Fittler cut out pass had Penrith hold a very commanding 18-2 lead at half time, in what was reported as a near perfect performance.
A second Brad Izzard try in the first minute of the second half, scored rather controversially on the seventh tackle of the set, stretched the lead out to 24-2.
The star-studded Broncos, brimming with both Queensland and Australian representatives, would hit back with three tries to the solitary penalty goal to Penrith.
However, it was not enough to bridge the gap, with the Panthers registering their first ever finals series victory, and arranging a meeting with minor premiers Canberra in the Major Semi Final the following week.
