Former Panthers captain who played 29 matches from 1976 to 1979 and later played at Newtown, Canterbury and South Sydney.

At the age of 30, he won a premiership as coach of Canterbury.

Two seasons later, he was back at Penrith in that role. 1990 culminated in an appearance in their maiden grand final, but ended runners up. Penrith went one better in 1991, being the first coach to deliver the club a premiership win.

A range of factors led to mixed results in the next 3 seasons but no more finals appearances.

He sensationally left the club towards the end of the 1994 season, and later coached the Roosters.

‘Gus’ was NSW coach in 8 series in 2 stints in the 1990s and 2000s, winning 6 series and being the state’s most successful coach in the Origin era.

Gould later returned to Penrith for a third stint as General Manager of Football Operations in 2011, a role he held until 2019, and since then has held consultancy roles at a number of NRL clubs.
