Originally from the NSW north coast village of Cudgen, Bently made his first grade debut in 1986. Whilst not a prolific try scorer, he earnt a reputation as a safe, defensive centre.
In 1991, he would make his 100th first grade appearance for the Panthers, and was selected as a starting centre in the victorious 1991 grand final, however, was replaced just before half time by Brad Izzard.
Bentley would be released at the end of 1992, and would be at Manly for two seasons (primarily in reserve grade, where he was captain). He returned for to Penrith for one final season in 1995, playing six matches in the second half of the season before retiring.
Post retirement, he was first of all a member of the NRL judiciary in the late 1990s before being elected as a member of the Panthers board of directors.
